I’ve been giving you bits of wacky laws around this great country, Canada.  Judging by the comments I’ve received, they seem to give you a few chuckles.  So to this end, I’ve found a link to Reader’s Digest, where they have a list of 13 strange laws in Canada.

Just to whet your appetite, here’s the first one:

It’s Illegal To Whistle in Petrolia, Ont. A Petrolia city rep says this unusual law simply aims to limit excessive noise between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., but according to Article 3, 772.3.6 on the town’s website, “Yelling, shouting, hooting, whistling or singing is prohibited at all times.” Keep your enthusiasm to yourself, folks.

  1. Hi, I live in Petrolia and the bylaw is not strictly enforced. 🙂 Also wanted to mention that Petrolia, Ontario has a very flat landscape. I think the photo you have is from another Petrolia (and there are several.)

      • Hi,

Here is a photo of the main street called “Petrolia Line” looking west. Feel free to use it. The town has the moniker, “Canada’s Victorian Oil Town” and there are many great stories to go with the history. There was even a bylaw that you are not allowed to transport nitroglycerin on the main street. We use to have 4 nitro plants in Petrolia but eventually, they all blew up. There are also some photos on the town website: https://town.petrolia.on.ca

Hope that helps. (The one you have on your site now is from Petrolia, California. A much warmer place. LOL)

        Cheers,
