Cineplex Closed Caption Viewing System

03 Nov

This new blog promises to be a great place to learn about the resources available for the hard of hearing. Today’s post surprised me. I hope you enjoy it! -tk

Hearing Ottawa

There are a number of Cineplex Movie Theatres in Ottawa that offer a Closed Caption “CC” Viewing System for the hard of hearing or the deaf. It is a system that consists of a small screen that displays captions for the viewer. It fits into the seat’s cup holder, and is flexible as to tilt down so that other movie goers are not distracted.

Note: Not all movies will have the CC functions.  If a movie does, it will display a “CC” in it’s title.  On a few occasions (through trial and error) the system has not functioned, however the Cineplex staff have been extremely apologetic and offered free movie vouchers in exchange.  While this is undoubtedly frustrating for the viewer when this occurs, the system does offer a way for hard of hearing or deaf individuals to still participate in the movie theatre experience.

I will total ear block for months at a time, which is annoying, to say the least … I was quite pleased about this. It’s a new blog, where I got this, and it looks very promising! 🙂

I am stone deaf in one year, thanks to an infection associated with an extremely bad case of shingles in 2007, and am a bit deaf in the other from years working in a noisy environment (I even used hearing protection!). The CC feature on televisions always is turned on in my home. Taking it one more step and installing it in theatres sounds like a great idea!
