September 11, unfortunately, will always be remembered for the tragedy at New York’s Twin Towers. For those brave men and women who died that day, and their families, I say a special prayer.
9/11 has always been a special day for me, as it’s my birthday, born in 19??! Here are a few who also have a birthday today.

1862 – Julian Byng, 1st Viscount Byng of Vimy, British army officer, 12th Governor General of Canada (died in 1935)
1924 – Rudolf Vrba, Czech-Canadian holocaust survivor & educator (died in 2006)
1925 – Harry Somers, Canadian composer (died in 1999)
1934 – Oliver Jones, Canadian pianist and composer

1862 – O. Henry, American author (died in 1910)
1885 – D. H. Lawrence, English novelist (died in 1930)
1958 – Roxann Dawson, American actress (Whoo-Hoo! Known for her role as B’Elanna Torres on Star Trek: Voyager)

1609 – Henry Hudson discovers Manhattan Island and the indigenous people living there.
1939 – World War II: Canada declares war on Germany, the country’s first independent declaration of war
1961 – Foundation of the World Wildlife Fund.

I have a friend whose birthday is on remembrance day, everyday is worth celebrating!

Once, in my church, a person came forward to request prayers for a family member nearing death. The next person to come up with a prayer request stuttered and stammered. She had a “prayer of praise” request for a happy event (birth of a healthy grandchild) in her family. The pastor reassured her, saying, “That’s ok. Celebration of this joy in your family isn’t disrespectful of the sorrow in another’s. God wants all our prayers.”
That said, today is a sad one, a day of remembrance for citizens of the US. We got our nose bloodied, our national pride wounded, and a wake up call to the basic reality we face in this world: Lots of people hate our blinking guts and will do harmful things to get that point across to us.
THAT said, though Canadians died in the tragedy, too, along with citizens of over 70 countries, Americans really took it to heart as an American event. We suffered, not the rest of the world, regardless of those citizens of other countries. (This is nonsense, of course, but ask an American, and most forget the nature of the World Trade Center family: It was international in scope!)
And THAT said, it is OK for you to have a very Happy Birthday and not be disrespectful of those who died in those terrorist events and of their families. Life goes on, and your happiness just adds to the richness of existence, which often is bittersweet. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! And don’t apologize for it! You didn’t select the day for the terrorists to fly those airliners into the ground, the Pentagon, and the World Trade Center Twin Towers.
