A Doll and Some Money

On this day, December 21, 1947, an 11-year-old girl from New Brunswick wrote a note to Santa and asked for a doll and some money.  “Just a few cents.  I’m very poor,” Villa Matchett wrote.


She attached her note to a Christmas tree — one tree, mind you, that was part of 1.5 million trees that were being exported to the United States.


Her words were read over the radio in Natchez, Mass.


This prompted an astounding generous response from Americans!


Villa said she was alerted of the letter’s fate when a reporter showed up at her home, before the gifts started arriving from all across the U.S.
