On November 2, 1796, the Six Nations Indians, led by Chief Joseph Brant, sold 38,000 hectares of their land to Colonel Richard Beasley. Beasley was a United Empire Loyalist who attracted a group of Pennsylvania German Mennonite farmers to the area!

This region was part of a large tract of land that the British Crown had given to the Six Nation Indians for their loyalty to the Crown during the American War of Independence.

Part of this land was to become Kitchener, Ontario.
